Porcupine Tree, Soundgarden, King’s X, Echo & The Bunnymen

Here’s a compilation of last week’s favorite bands (see my twitter stream):

  • Porcupine Tree: “Blackest Eyes” live is killer progrock guitar work
  • Soundgarden: angry dudes in their youth “Blow up the outside world” Great song – Beatles-esque
  • King’s X: The lead singer looks like a male Grace Jones w/mad vocal chops
  • Echo & The Bunnymen: another one I was ridiculed for liking as a boy. Well, everyone should hate this video

Mudvayne, Disturbed, Cannibal Corpse, Elf Project

Here’s a compilation of last week’s favorite bands (see my twitter stream):

  • Mudvayne: World So Cold was a fav of mine – greatest, most emotional scream-o performance
  • Disturbed: Not in love w/them but their cover of Genesis’ Land of Confusion better than original
  • Cannibal Corpse:  Funny stuff. Who could forget their performance in Ace Ventura?
  • Elf Project: Interviewed them for BandsLikeRush.com. A must-listen for Rush fans.

Cynic, System of a Down, Meat Machine, Metallica, Primus, Electric Sorcery

Here’s a compilation of last week’s favorite bands (see my twitter stream):

  • Cynic – Virtuosic progrock with touches of emo vocal style – oh and synthesizers
  • System of a Down – I’m always ~10 yrs late to good new rock. Still on SOAD’s 2005 double album
  • Meat Machine – and NOT just cause I played guitar in the band – very Zappa/Beach Boys-esque
  • Metallica – like others I believe Black Album was jump-the-shark milestone. Gimme Cliff Burton
  • Primus – remember when a band like that could get heavy MTV rotation
  • Electric Sorcery – 70s-ish progrock – cool use of synths and other goofy devices – bit of reggae too

Cocteau Twins, The Hue, Neil Young, Alan Holdsworth, Frank Zappa, tera melos, Behold The Arctopus, Dysrhythmia

Here’s a compilation of last week’s favorite bands (see my twitter stream):

  • Cocteau Twins – love the singer and nonsense lyrics – written plenty of wordless art songs in my day
  • The Hue – sicko progmetal/progrock
  • Neil Young. Unlike The Who, Stones (blech), haven’t tired of him. I still fantasize wrote this song
  • Alan Holdsworth – Eddie Van Halen’s guitar idol. Insane player, but commercially unviable jazzrock
  • Frank Zappa – fondly remember singing Dynamo Hum at Karaoke in college – audience was horrified
  • tera melos. Thanks to Ernesto Gianloa. Jarring, sloppy-feeling yet insanely precise progrock/jazz
  • Behold The Arctopus. Insane instrumental progmetal/progrock. Will make you insane too
  • Dysrhythmia. Instrumental progmetal/progrock. Voivod-ish, or like Rush with all 12 tones

Hed pe, Flutter Effect, Rurik, Tool, Saosin, The Fall of Troy, Opeth

A new feature! I tweet every day about bands and songs that I’m listening to and want to share.

Here’s a compilation of last week’s bands:

  • (Hed) P.E. – funkiest, rocking-est – but nastiest misogynist nurap song – oi!
  • FluttrEffect – eclectic prog rock w/marimba and cello! I interviewed them for BandsLikeRush.com
  • Rurik – post-punk  indie rock – across from Thomas Dolby, P.I.L. and Primus
  • Tool (kinda)  – love their first albums – love the stripped-down record production
  • Saosin – virtuosic little post-hardcore band – busy solo/rhythm gtrs – wish I had their career at age 20 :(
  • TheFallofTroy – love this prog rock, progressive metal style – solo gtrs in verses, insane drums (same camp as Saosin)
  • Opeth – style goes from blues-rock to prog-rock to heavy metal to acoustic rock in one swell foop. And lead singer Mikael Akerfeldt goes from cookie monster-style vocals to crooning baritone blues style just as fast.
